Vidyut weaves a magic

CHENNAI JAN. 7. Vidyut Sivaramakrishnan turned Tamil Nadu's Subbiah Pillai Trophy South Zone limited-overs contest against Kerala on its head with his left-arm spin at the ICL-Guru Nanak College ground here on Wednesday.

The all-rounder, who had returned only a day earlier from Cuttack where he ensured the State under-22 team's entry into the all-India final with an all-round display, performed a hat-trick which enabled the side snatch victory by eight runs in a pressure-cooker situation.

Kerala, buoyed by middle-order batsman Ajay Kudua's 99 (95b, 9x4, 2x6), needed nine runs for victory with three wickets in hand from the last over.

Vidyut, bowling his fifth over, claimed Prashanth Chandran (caught by S. Suresh at mid-wicket), Tinu Yohannan (caught by S. Sriram at deep mid-wicket) and M. Suresh Kumar (caught by Madanagopal at long-off) with his first three deliveries to seal the issue.

Tamil Nadu, the defending champion, took four points from the match. Earlier, the host, put in, made 240 for eight, thanks to the 76-run second-wicket stand between opener Suresh and left-hander Sriram. For Kerala, mediumpacers Yohannan and Chandran took two wickets each.

The scores:

At MAC: Hyderabad 155 in 45.5 overs (Ibrahim Khaleel 33, D. Ganesh three for 13) lost to Karnataka 158 for three in 36.2 overs (J. Arun Kumar 53, Mithun Beerala 32, Sunil Joshi 57 not out). Points: Karnataka 5 (including one bonus point); Hyderabad minus 1 (for conceding bonus point).
