Arun, Mary reign supreme

KOZHIKODE JAN. 7. S. Arun Prasad survived a scare, while Mary Ann Gomes opted for safety as the Kajah second National sub-junior chess super-league concluded at the Chess India Complex here on Wednesday. Both drew their final round encounters to finish their campaigns unbeaten. They had emerged the champions with a round to spare on Tuesday itself.

G.N. Gopal gave the host something to cheer about as he finished runner-upAt the prize distribution ceremony, the players were in for a pleasant surprise when the AICF secretary P.T. Ummer Koya said that the top ten, and not five as was announced earlier, from the boys' and girls' sections will represent India at the Youth Olympiad to be held here in July.

"As a host India will be fielding four teams,"" he told The Hindu.

The following players will form those teams: S. Arun Prasad, G.N. Gopal, Rahul Sangma, K.Vijay Keerthi, T. Abhay, Praveen Prasad, Sriram Sarja, Pratik Shriwas, K. Nikhilesh Kumar, P. Karthikeyan, Mary Ann Gomes, Soumya Swaminathan, P. Sivasankari, M. Rajadarshini, N. Raghavi, Kiran Monisha Mohanty, J. Rajasurya, V.K. Sindhu, S. Harini and Meenu Rajendran.

The results:

Boys (11th round): G.N. Gopal (Ker) 6.5 drew with T. Abhay (TN) 6; K. Nikhilesh Kumar (AP) 5.5 lost to Praveen Prasad (AP) 5.5; Pratik Shriwas (Mah) 5.5 bt K. Vijay Keerthi (Kar) 6.5; S. Arun Prasad (TN) 8.5 drew with T.U. Navin Kanna 2.5; Sriram Sarja (Kar) 5.5 bt Rahul Sangma (Bih) 6.5; Vishal Shah (Mah) 3.5 lost to P. Karthikeyan (TN) 4.

Girls (13th round): S. Harini (TN) 4.5 lost to Soumya Swaminathan (Mah) 9.5; Mary Ann Gomes (Ben) 10.5 drew with M. Rajadarshini (TN) 7; G. Pratika (Kar) 2 drew with V.K. Sindhu (TN) 5.5; J. Rajasurya (TN) 6 drew with N. Raghavi (TN) 7; Anjana N. Sowjanya (TN) 2.5 lost to Pon. N. Krithikha (TN) 4; Kiran Monisha Mohanty (Ori) 7 bt Meenu Rajendran (Ker) 4.5; P. Sivasankari (TN) 8 bye.

The final standings:

Boys: 1. Arun 8.5; 2-4. Gopal, Rahul and Vijay 6.5; 5. Abhay 6; 6-9. Praveen, Sriram, Pratik and Nikhilesh 5.5; 10. Karthikeyan 4; 11. Vishal 3.5; 12. Navin 2.5.
