It's no pot of gold

KANCHEEPURAM JAN. 7. The demand for Pongal mud pots has declined and potters here are making only a few thousand pots for the coming festival.

According to 15 families at Thirukkalimedu, near here, each of whom produced at least 5,000 pots a decade ago, are now making only 3,000-4,000, big and small.

Ramasamy, one of the potters, told The Hindu that most of the people including in villages switched to pressure cookers for preparing pongal.

Only some families in villages were still buying new pots. But they were not interested in big pots and bought only the smaller ones, at Rs. 20.

However, the potters were still making the ware in anticipation of patronage from villagers.

``We are making only Pongal pots and gave up making other pots as nobody is interested in buying mud ware. We have fixed the maximum price of a well-designed big Pongal pot at Rs.50 and the minimum price is Rs.20. We get only Rs. 5 as profit a pot'', they said.
