Woman arrested on usury charge
MADURAI
JAN.7.
An unauthorised woman moneylender, who allegedly harassed a widow, charging exorbitant rates of interest on a loan, was arrested by the Karuppayoorani police today.
According to the police, Angammal (60) of Tahsildhar Nagar submitted a petition to the Madurai Superintendent of Police, Avi Prakash Sinha, that she had borrowed a loan of Rs.20,000 from the moneylender, G. Pushpa (55), of Jaihindpuram, a few years ago.
Though she had repaid a sum of Rs.70,000 as interest and capital through monthly instalments, the moneylender claimed that there was still a due of Rs.1.25 lakhs. When Angammal refused to pay anymore, the accused harassed and threatened her with dire consequences.
A special team, led by the Karuppayoorani Inspector, A. Ganesan, arrested Pushpa. Preliminary investigations revealed that the accused had been indulging in usury business for several years. A case under Section 3 (read with Section 4) of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Charging Exorbitant Interest (Ordinance) Act, 2003, was registered against her.
The Second Judicial Magistrate, Jegannathan, remanded Pushpa to judicial custody for a period of 15 days. She was lodged in the Tiruchi prison, the sources added.
