Congress moves

Sir, — The Congress president, Sonia Gandhi's decision to lead from the front in the negotiations with likeminded parties, both in and outside the NDA, to forge formal alliances or make seat adjustments, and her advice to the CWC to prepare early an election manifesto listing out the party's priorities are steps in the right direction. Many regional parties in States such as Jharkhand, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh have already come forward to join hands with the Congress.

Sir, — It is amusing to see the Congress running around seeking alliance partners. When the BJP undertakes such an exercise it is termed opportunistic, but when the Congress does it, it is said to be in the national interest!

Sir, — The Nationalist Congress Party leader, P.A. Sangma, has said that if P.V. Narasimha Rao is projected as the leader of the Congress ahead of the elections, most parties would be willing to join the front. In that case, will Mr. Sangma rejoin the Congress?

Sir, — Most political parties seem to be in a hurry to seal alliances before the next Lok Sabha election.

Why can all parties not meet and design a common minimum programme for five years without conducting elections? This will save the national exchequer crores of rupees.

Sir, — With the Opposition parties busy trying to forge alliances against the ruling party, the fun has begun. It will be interesting to see who the Opposition's prime ministerial candidate is.

The BJP chief, M. Venkaiah Naidu, has rightly said that the battle will be between "Vajpayee and a question mark".

P. Krishna,

Chennai
