Trinamool bandh call criticised
By Our Special Correspondent
KOLKATA,
JAN. 8.
West Bengal's ruling Left Front has criticised the Trinamool Congress for calling a bandh on Feb. 3 "on the excuse of opposing taxes on domestic animals.'' Biman Bose, the Front chairman, and CPI (M) politburo member, said the Front would oppose the proposed bandh as ``the ground for calling such a bandh is utterly baseless.''
Mr. Bose said that it was shocking to note the way Ms. Banerjee, the Trinamool supremo was trying to misinterpret the Government's efforts to collect as much revenue as existing laws allowed. " No tax has been imposed on domestic animals till date and Ms. Banerjee is trying to make political gains out of non-existent taxes.''
On Jan. 7, the Chief Minister, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, ruled out imposition of taxes on domestic animals by the panchayats saying his Government had only identified the areas, under the provisions of the Panchayat Act of 1973 from where the panchayats can mobilise resources.
