Vijayawada
By Our Staff Reporter
VIJAYAWADA, JAN. 8. A grief-stricken farmer who cultivated paddy in 3.2 acres of land, collapsed when she saw that every grain of the crop that was left in sheaves was destroyed and died subsequently in Gandepudi village near Gudivada. She is the third farmer who reportedly died unable to face the loss and the prospect of clearing huge debts. Kothakota Samarajyam, 40, leased out two acres of land adjoining the 1.2 acres she owned and cultivated paddy. She went to the field to farm because her husband, Veeraghavaiah, is dumb and deaf. The harvested crop kept in sheaves for drying in the field was inundated during the cyclone. She however did not lose heart immediately hoping that she would get something from her field. There was water in the field for a very long time because of poor drainage. When she finally went to the field there was nothing to salvage. She reportedly borrowed Rs 70,000 for marrying two of her five daughters.
