COIMBATORE, JAN. 8. The PSG Institutions in Coimbatore have joined hands with the Kavithalaya-Digital Studios Group, Chennai, to provide practical knowledge and training to students of electronic media, as part of an industry-institute initiative in the entertainment industry. In an interview to managing trustee, PSG and Sons Charities, V. Rajan, and executive director, Kavithalaya Productions, Kandaswamy Bharathan, said the organisations were ``in the process of entering into an agreement'' and that a memorandum of understanding would be signed very shortly. Mr. Rajan said a media studio was being established at the PSG College of Arts and Science at Rs. 2.5 crores. It would have television programme production facilities, a dubbing theatre, a recording theatre, a movie post-production unit and a multimedia graphics laboratory. The future trend was towards ``convergence'' or fusion of information technology, communication and entertainment (ICE). The linkage with the entertainment industry would bring the latest technology to the media studio and facilitate job placements on the lines of campus interviews for students of information technology. The studio would promote video conferencing as part of the efforts at taking technology to rural areas. ``Filmmakers will be able to walk in with a story and walk out with a film,'' said Mr. Bharathan. The studio would offer recording in Dolby as well as Digital Theatre Sound systems, in keeping with international standards. Animation could be done in-house and digital animation added to regular film footage to enhance the visual impact. To explore the possibility of academic exchange programmes, Mr. Rajan and Mr. Bharathan visited the Multimedia University and the Lim Kok Wing University in Malaysia. They met one of the senior Ministers in the Malaysian Government, Khalil Yakoub, who was in charge of Information and Broadcasting. He is likely to visit Coimbatore soon.
