Cricket telecast rights sought for Doordarshan

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, JAN. 8 . Prasar Bharati is planning to make fresh efforts to secure for Doordarshan the telecast rights of the India-Pakistan cricket series in Pakistan from March 1. So far, Doordarshan has not been able to secure telecast rights of the series as Ten Sports - which has the rights - is only willing to give it match highlights.

The Prasar Bharati Chief Executive Officer, K. S. Sarma, told reporters here today that the broadcasting corporation would make best use of the "current scenario" and make other efforts with the Pakistan Cricket Board to secure the rights.

Prasar Bharati's contention is that since Ten Sports is a satellite channel reaching only 10 per cent of the cable households across the country — which is less than 50 per cent of TV homes — Doordarshan by virtue of being a terrestrial channel with a reach of over 90 per cent ought to have the telecast rights of the series.
