BELGAUM, JAN. 9. Activists of several Dalit organisations, including the Bhim Sena and the Dalit Sangarsh Samithi, took out a padayatra from Khanapur to Baloga village in protest against the alleged caste discrimination in the village on Thursday. As many as 500 activists, who participated in the protest, raised slogans condemning the alleged atrocities by the upper castes and the lack of will of the administration in taking action against the guilty. The Dalits alleged that a social boycott had been imposed on them for over two months. A fine of Rs. 500 had been announced for violating the diktats of certain influential villagers and communicating with the Dalits. They had submitted a complaint to the tahsildar seeking action against 13 villagers, including a gram panchayat member, in this regard. Since no action was taken and the social boycott continued, they decided to take out the padayatra. However, the Tahsildar, R.G. Nadger, had convened of meeting of both sections in the village in the presence of police officials to sort out the differences.
