MUMBAI, JAN. 9. A sessions court on Wednesday sentenced Salim Samsher Shaikh, a 22-year-old youth, to undergo 10 years' rigorous imprisonment under Section 376 of the IPC for raping a mentally challenged minor girl on a local train late in the night on August 14, 2002, between Malad and Borivali suburban stations in full view of half-a-dozen commuters. It also awarded him another two-year term under Section 354 of the IPC (outraging the modesty of a woman). The two sentences will run separately. Salim was convicted on the basis of the testimony given by Ambrish Mishra and Vasant Kulai who were travelling in the same compartment. Mr. Mishra is a journalist working with an English daily and he had lodged a complaint with police. The court also took into account the medical report of Baban Shinde, who had examined the accused.
