India to learn herbal medicine marketing from China

LUCKNOW, JAN 9. The first Sino-Indian workshop on quality control and standardisation of traditional medicines will help India learn production techniques, presentability and marketing of herbal medicines from China, National Botanical Research Institute Director Dr P Pushpangadan said.

China was on the other hand keen on borrowing India's deep insight and knowledge on medicinal plants, he said at the three-day workshop on `Quality Control and Standardisation of Traditional Medicines--Indo-China Experience'.

He said ``Although India is far advanced in the field of traditional medicine, China is the world leader when it comes to herbal drug manufacturing and marketing.''

China enjoys 30 per cent share of the global herbal market estimated at 60 billion US dollars annually.

Prof Lin recalled the ties between the two neighbours in the past when the Chinese made regular visits here to broaden their knowledge about medicinal plants and to learn Ayurveda.

``With increased global demand for herbal drugs, maintaining the quality, safety and proper supply of traditional medicines has become a great challenge. The joint workshop is the first step in the direction of mutual gains through cooperation,'' he observed.

The workshop, organised by the NBRI in collaboration with CSIR, New Delhi and National Natural Science Foundation (NSFC) of China was inaugurated yesterday by Uttar Pradesh Governor Vishnu Kant Shastri. - UNI
