Double entries in electoral rolls: 28,000 names detected

VIJAYAWADA, JAN. 9. The new computer software being used for identifying double entries in the electoral rolls has generated a list of 28,000 names in Krishna district, said district Collector and district electoral officer, K Prabhakar Reddy.

Allaying fears of party representatives here today, he said that attempts by people with vested interest to enrol both in rural and urban areas would be foiled by the software. The names on the list would be verified and it would be included in the list only at one place. Giving figures of voters included and deleted into the electoral rolls, Mr Reddy said 1,69,191 voters were included and 3,17,140 deleted from the electoral roles of all constituencies in the district till January 7. Therefore there were 1,48,949 less voters in the district.

The largest number of 30,596 voters included into the electoral rolls of Kankipadu constituency and even a large number of 48,056 votes were deleted from the lists of the constituency. There were 17,460 voters less in the constituency. The number of voters deleted in many of the constituency is more than the number included. The constituencies in which the number of voters is less are Vuyyuru (16,468 less), Nuzvid (14,817 less), Mylavaram (14,196 less), Jaggaiahpet (12,518), Nandigama (11,611 less), Vijayawada East (11,175) and Bandar (12,108 less). Even in Nidumolu the number of voters are less by 9,952.

Party representatives from Congress (I), CPI and TDP urged the Election Commission to ensure that migrant workers were not deprived of their voting rights. TDP district president, Tondepu Dasaradha Janardhana Rao, CPI city secretary, K Sekhar Babu, CPI (M) State executive member, P MuraliKrishna, Congress leaders, Alla Challa Rao (deputy mayor) N Srihari, Muddukrishna, and others made a representation to the Chief Electoral Officer, M Narayana Rao.
