HYDERABAD, JAN. 9. The Agriculture Minister, Vadde Sobhanadreeswara Rao, on Friday termed `unfortunate and unfair' the charge of the All India Congress Committee general secretary, Ghulam Nabi Azad, that the relief to farmers affected by cyclone was `too little and too late.' Addressing a press conference, Mr. Rao said the relief was promptly given soon after the visit of the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, to the affected areas. The Government had given input subsidy worth Rs. 25 crores to farmers, including a minimum of Rs. 1250 per hectare of paddy. This was against a subsidy of Rs. 625 per hectare given in 1994 during the Congress rule. The norms for procurement of foodgrains had been relaxed to an extent of 46 per cent refractions, discoloured grain being 25 per cent, sprouted 15 per cent and shrunken 6 per cent. "Mr. Azad is either not aware of these steps or is being misled," he said. Apart from extending prompt relief, the Government had taken several steps for the benefit of farmers, he said, listing and comparing them with those initiated during the Congress regime.
