Education fair opens up avenues abroad

HYDERABAD, JAN. 9. Students aspiring to go abroad for higher studies got an insight into the opportunities available and the intricacies involved in the admissions at the International Education Fair organised by `Afairs' here on Friday.

More than 45 stalls had been put up for the two-day fair by representatives of universities from UK, Germany, France, Malaysia and consultants dealing with education in countries like USA, England, France, Switzerland, Australia and New Zealand. "The fair aims at providing a unique opportunity to students to get information on the choice of their education, destinations and study opportunities," said Sanjeev Bolia, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Afairs. Hundreds of students thronged the venue along with their parents to seek details about the courses available and their admission chances in various institutions. Though Information Technology (IT) and Business Administration had been the sought-after subjects, several students evinced keen interest in the under-graduate programmes and research activities too. Availability of scholarships and further job opportunities were other key issues that attracted the attention. The chairman, Raffles Education Group, Singapore, Collin Pereira, said that Indian students were keen to pursue higher education in Malaysia and Singapore too. "Lots of students have evinced keen interest in our management programmes," Mr. Collin said. "The fee is half of what they pay in US universities and the risk of visa rejection is also less. Moreover, the courses are of high quality," he claimed. Assumption University from Bangkok, too, had set up a stall to explain the opportunities available in Thailand.

"These fairs help us in understanding the whole concept of education abroad," said Lokesh, a student. "Apart from guidance on preparatory exams like TOEFL, IELTS, GRE and GMAT, the direct interaction helps us in finding alternative opportunities," he said. "With seminars also a part of the fair, we got a better understanding of the opportunities and instant clearing of doubts."

A representative of DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service), Susanne Romanowski, said many students had approached to know about the research programmes in Germany. She said German universities had been offering free education, but some private universities had come up where students had to pay the fee. "This is the first time we are concentrating in Andhra Pradesh and the response has been overwhelming," Ms. Susanne said.
