BANGALORE, JAN. 9. The 29th Synod meeting of the Church of South India (CSI) will be held from January 10 to 14 at Bishop Cotton Boys' School here. The meeting is held once in two years and includes the election of office-bearers and members of the executive committee of the CSI, the Moderator of the CSI, Rev. K.J. Samuel, told presspersons here on Friday. The CSI Synod is the supreme policy-making body of the largest Protestant church in India. Rev. Samuel said the meeting would review the work of the church, discuss policy and disciplinary matters, and set priorities for the next two years. Programmes of the church in the field of health and education and those pertaining to marginalised communities would also be discussed, he added. Rev. Vasanthakumar, Bishop, Karnataka Central Diocese, under whose jurisdiction the meeting would be held, said bishops and clergy and lay representatives from all the 22 dioceses under the CSI would participate in the meeting. The dioceses comprise those in the four southern States and Jaffna in Sri Lanka. Each diocese is headed by a bishop. The CSI is the largest Protestant denomination in India. There are about three million people in the 22 dioceses, 1,780 churches, 42 colleges, 300 secondary schools, 2,100 elementary schools, 75 hospitals, 200 dispensaries, and 450 boarding homes and hostels under the church.
