BANGALORE, JAN. 9. The Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) will display the final electoral rolls in all its revenue offices by January 31. As many as 49,896 new voters applied for inclusion in the electoral rolls in November and December 2003, when the civic body conducted a three-week drive to enlist new voters. The BMP has issued identity cards to over 19 lakh eligible voters of the 20 lakh voters in its limits. About 6,000 voters in each of the 12 Assembly constituencies are yet to get the cards. Meanwhile, the proposed programme for issuing identity cards this month and in February is likely to be suspended following reports that Assembly elections will be advanced, according to BMP officials in charge of revising the voters' lists. The BMP has held three programmes for issuing identity cards for voters in the past one year. If it is able to complete another programme, all voters in the BMP's jurisdiction will have identity cards. Now, the BMP has decided to wait for an official communication from the Election Commission, officials say. "If the polls are scheduled for March or April, we may be busy with election work and the drive to issue voter identity cards will have to be suspended. We plan to wait for a communication from the Election Commission on the schedule of elections," they say. Those who do not have identity cards can vote by producing one of 12 documents, including the ration card and driving licence, according to officials.
