Kalam to inaugurate workshop on January 14

BANGALORE, JAN. 9. The President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, will inaugurate a workshop on "Information and Communications Technology for Sustainable Development" here on January 14, a theme which echoes his thinking on the use of technology.

The workshop will be organised by the Carnegie Mellon University, Pittisburgh, U.S., under the aegis of the U.S. National Science Foundation and the United Nations Division for Sustainable Development. The Indian Institute of Science and the National Institute for Advanced Studies are associated, which will go on up to January 17 at the IISc.

The workshop will cover the following subjects where Information and Communications Technology can make a major impact: infrastructure development; basic human needs; economic development and empowerment, including e-governance and gender issues.

Among the 120 participants are Mohamed Muhsin and Carlos Braga of the World Bank; Eric Brwer, co-founder of Inktomi; Joseph Stiglitz, Nobel Prize winner in Economics for 2001; N. Quaynor, Network Computer Systems, Ghana; Nitin Desai, former Under-Secretary General, United Nations; Peter Freeman, National Science Foundation, U.S.; Raj Reddy, Carnegie Mellon University; Richard Newton, University of California, Berkeley and Tom Kalil, former IT advisor to President Clinton.

Several technologists and professionals working in areas of sustainable development from India will also participate.

The workshop will draft a research agenda on information and communications technology for sustainable development covering the short, medium and long-term needs for making information and communication technology relevant to development.
