Christians' contribution to education lauded

The Bishop Edward Lynch Cotton Auditorium at Bishop Cotton Boys' School

BANGALORE, JAN. 9. The State Government is keen on promoting health and education, the Minister for Higher Education and Information, G. Parameshwar, said here today.

Inaugurating the Bishop Edward Lynch Cotton Auditorium at Bishop Cotton Boys' School here, he commended the school and its Principal, A. Ebenezer, for their contribution to education, and said the Government had sanctioned a B.Ed. college to the institution.

There was a need to recognise the vital role played by the Christian community in promoting the cause of education in the country, Mr. Parameshwar said. The first Five-Year Plan had given importance to health and education, but much before that the "peace loving and god fearing" Christian community had done much to improve the standard of education and healthcare by establishing educational institutions and hospitals in India.

"We have to build institutions of international standards so that the students are prepared to become citizens of the world," he added.

J. Alexander, Minister for Tourism, unveiled a statue of Bishop Cotton in front of the auditorium.

Francis Fathome, Chief Executive and Secretary, Council for Indian School Certificate Examination, New Delhi, described Bishop Cotton Boys' School as "one of the few best schools not only in India but the world".

Dr. Ebenezer said the auditorium project, which was a dream come true for the school, was possible due to the dedication of the staff and students.

The Bishop Edward Lynch Cotton Auditorium is said to be the largest in any school in the country and has a seating capacity of 1,400.

It contains state-of-the art lighting and acoustic equipment. With 65,000-sq.ft. of floor area, the auditorium is constructed in the style of a Greek amphitheatre. Every corner of the auditorium affords a good view of the 1,200-sq.ft. stage. The building has a bank, book and uniform stores, music room, cafeteria, and a basement parking facility.

K.J. Samuel, Moderator, Church of South India (CSI), and Rev. S. Vasanthakumar, Bishop, Karnataka Central Diocese, CSI, were present.
