BANGALORE, JAN. 9. The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) will complete 13 projects for overhauling the city's old sewerage system and preventing flow of sewage into storm water drains by August this year. A note from the board says that work began in June 2003 under the board's Rs. 46.27-crore Environmental Action Plan to improve sewer sub-mains, trunk sewers, and other sewers. The scheme, sanctioned under the National River Conservation Plan, receives 70 per cent funding from the Centre. The rest of the funds required is provided by the State Government. The plan is to divert sewage from storm water drains to the three main drainage zones, or the Vrishabhavathi, Koramangala and Challaghatta, and Hebbal valleys. According to the board, 24 per cent of work has been completed so far. For example, a 900-mm. diameter line near RBANMS College has been replaced with a 1,200-mm. diameter sewer line. The note says that work related to the Koramangala and Challaghatta Valley has been awarded to Srimauli Builder, and that related to the Vrishabhavathi Valley to the Indian Hume Pipe Company.
