Two Assembly constituencies to be reduced

TUTICORIN, JAN.10. After a delimitation exercise based on the 2001 census, one Assembly Constituency each in Tuticorin and Kanyakumari districts would be reduced since population in the districts was well below the prescribed level of 2.65 lakhs per constituency, the State Election Commissioner, V. Palanisamy, has said.

Addressing reporters here on Friday, after holding discussion with the Collectors of the two districts, Mr. Palanisamy said the delimitation exercise for the Parliament and Assembly constituencies would be carried out on basis of the 2001 census and each Assembly constituency in the State should have 2,65,431 persons as per the latest census.

Since Tuticorin district had a population of only 15,65,743, the existing seven Assembly constituencies in the district would be reduced to six, he said.

"However, there would not be any change in the number of constituencies in the neighbouring Tirunelveli district. On the other hand, Chennai, Kancheepuram and Thiruvallur districts would be getting two more constituencies each under the delimitation exercise while Virudhunagar district would be getting one more constituency," he said.

The recommendations of increasing or reducing the constituencies would be placed before the Constituency Delimitation Committee, headed by Justice Kuldeep Singh, which would make a final decision on this issue.

Mr. Palanisamy hinted that there might be "some changes" in the number of reserve constituencies in the State, which now stands at 45.

The Tuticoirn Collector, K. Rajaraman, the Kanyakumari Collector, Rajesh Lakhoni, the District Revenue Officer, N. Bhaskaran, the Sub-Collector, G. Prakash, and officials participated in the meeting with the State Election Commissioner.
