KOZHIKODE, JAN. 10. The sixth Kakkad Memorial Award was presented to Gafoor Karuvannur by the poet and scholar, K. Ayyappa Panikker, at the Andatta Government Upper Primary School at Arangadath, near Koyilandi today. Gafoor Karuvannur gets the award for his poem, "Kazhchabanglavinu munnile kal.'' The award is instituted for poets below the age of 35. Gafoor is a teacher in the Puthuppanam Government higher secondary school. Dr. Ayyappa Panikker said the principal reason for poetry remaining untainted by commercialisation was the pain and effort needed to appreciate it. Even those who evinced interest and talent in poetry in their early life tended to move on to other genre which, having become commercialised, were more lucrative in material terms. The very fact that a young poet was being honoured with the Kakkad Award was eloquent proof of the determination of young poets to keep the rich poetic legacy alive, he said. Dr. Ayyappa Panikker said such rich heritage would not be found even in the so-called developed countries. The l36th annual issue of the Kerala Kavitha 2004, compiled and edited by Dr. Ayyappa Panikker, was also released at the function.
