WASHINGTON, JAN. 10. With barely 10 days to go before the critical Iowa Caucuses, the Democratic front-runner, Howard Dean, has got the key endorsement of the State's senior Senator, Tom Harkins; but has also acknowledged the momentum of the retired General Wesley Clark, who is pulling ahead on a national basis. Gen. Clark is not contesting in Iowa and is trailing the former Governor of Vermont in New Hampshire by double digits in the primaries of January 27. The apprehension is that if Gen. Clark pulls up at the number two slot in New Hampshire and maintains his national momentum, that would pose a serious threat to Mr. Dean for the nomination. "We think General Clark does have a little momentum here and I think that's understandable. He has not been for the most part in the fray of all the attacks that have gone on. But we don't find that our support, our core support is eroding", Mr. Dean remarked. The problem for the Dean campaign has been that Gen. Clark has pulled into a statistical tie in a recent national poll and has been active in fund raising. Representatives in the Dean campaign have also been noticed attending Gen. Clark's events distributing flyers questioning Gen. Clark's commitments to the Democratic Party or his consistencies in views pertaining to domestic and foreign policies.
