26 civic works proposed in Tirupati

TIRUPATI. Jan. 10. In all, 26 works have been proposed in the heart of Tirupati under the Andhra Pradesh Urban Services Project (APUSP) funded by the World Bank with the twin objectives of augmenting the civic amenities and to give the temple city a facelift.

The works identified would be undertaken in the area close to the Govindarajaswamy temple and its holy tank considering its high density of pilgrim movement. Of the 26 works identified, six relate to drinking water supply, nine to drainage works, three to public health works, five to road-under-bridges, two to parks and setting up of high-mast lamps at four main junctions.

The APUSP working group was taken around the locations identified for these works by the Chairperson of the Tirupati Municipal Council, K. Sankar Reddy, on Friday. The group was here for an evaluation of the identified works prior to they being placed before the municipal council for a formal approval and forwarded to the World Bank for funds.

Mr. Reddy said he was keen on organising cultural programmes and religious discourses around the holy tank so that a spiritual atmosphere could prevail around and add to the sanctity and serenity of the area. He indicated that if any problems pertaining to parking of vehicles were to crop up, the municipality would not mind developing special parking lots at its elementary school building near the tank or at its unused park in the TP area.

Mr. Reddy said he would meet the TTD Board Chairman, D. K. Audikesavulu, and the Chief Engineer, Sathyanarayana Raju, to seek their help and expertise in making the project a reality.
