CHENNAI, JAN. 10. The former Chief Election Commissioner, T.N. Seshan, said today that although there might have been some truth in what the present CEC, J.M. Lyngdoh, had stated, he need not have been "so explicit" in describing politicians as a `cancer.' Asked by newsmen whether he would like to comment on Mr. Lyngdoh's remarks, Mr. Seshan said, "In one's life, many things which are true cannot always be stated in explicit terms... this is perhaps one of them." To another question, Mr. Seshan said he found nothing wrong in advancing the elections to the Lok Sabha by some months. The Election Commission should, however, consider all aspects like examinations and the harvest season before announcing the (poll) dates. He felt that there was no cause for worry about falling voter turnout during elections. The percentage of voting in India was one of the highest in the world. When asked what would be his advice to Mr. Lyngdoh, the former CEC quipped: "I would tell him, enjoy your retirement when you retire on February 6 or 7."
