BJP executive to mull on early poll

HYDERABAD, JAN. 10. The ball was set rolling for the imminent dissolution of the Lok Sabha when five general secretaries of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) -- Pramod Mahajan, Sanjay Joshi, Anita Arya, Shivraj Singh Chauhan and Muqtar Abbas Naqvi -- and the party president, M. Venkaiah Naidu, met here on Saturday to finalise the agenda for the party national executive meeting on Sunday and Monday.

It was decided that the executive would give its opinion (on early election) and leave the decision to the Prime Minister, A.B. Vajpayee. Briefing newsmen after the one and a half hour meeting, the party spokesman, Prakash Javadekar, said the executive would give its opinion, but it was the prerogative of the Prime Minister to take the decision and the Election Commission to finalise the schedule of polls.

Mr. Javadekar also said the meeting decided to move three resolutions for the executive to adopt. The political resolution would dwell on the political scenario in the country, the economic resolution on the achievements of the NDA Government and the economic situation and the third would address the Indian success at the recent South Asian Association of Regional Cooperation (SAARC) summit at Islamabad. The agenda for the executive meeting would also include discussion on party programmes in the next two to three months when the elections might be held.
