A dream come true for rallyists

Rally legend Juha Kankkunen addressing the drivers.

CHENNAI, JAN. 10. The 14 rally drivers couldn't have asked for anything better: a training camp with four-time World champion Juha Kankkunen, one of the most successful drivers in the history of the sport.

The Finn, invited by the MRF Rally School, spent Thursday and Friday with the drivers. The theory class was followed by three sessions of practicals at Sholinganallur.

"He assessed us individually, sat with each one in the car and pointed out the mistakes committed. It was a dream come true for us," said Lohit Urs, the 1400cc National champion from Mysore.

Kankkunen, winner of 23 WRC races, is the joint holder of the record for most drivers' titles won, with countryman and protégé Tommi Makinen.

"I am impressed with the awareness levels the boys displayed. Exposure will make them a lot better," said Kankkunen, who won the titles in 1986, 1987, 1991 and 1993.

Kankkunen will conduct a three-day camp in Delhi for the MRF Rally School between Jan. 12 and 14.
