CHENNAI, JAN. 10. The KAP Viswanatham Government Medical College, Tiruchi, has finally been officially declared a recognised medical institution. After having undergone turmoil for a year, MBBS graduates from the college can practise as doctors. Without permanent recognition for the college, the first batch was not eligible to work as doctors. They could not apply for postgraduate courses or employment and have lost a year's education. The first batch graduated in early 2003. The dean, Kalavathy Ponniraivan, said a communication from the Medical Council of India (MCI), ``recognising degrees awarded by the Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University to students of the Tiruchi medical college,'' was received last week. The office of the Directorate of Medical Education confirmed that the college was granted permanent recognition. The college, started in 1998, was recommended for permanent recognition by the council October last, but the process of obtaining the Centre's approval dragged on. The State Government had been struggling for over a year to get the recognition status. Early last year, the MCI wrote to the Union Health Ministry against granting recognition to the college for a ``range of deficiencies.'' The State rectified the defects and approached the council again.
