375 specialty doctors to be appointed

PALAKKAD, JAN. 10 . The Health Minister, P. Sankaran, today said that 375 specialty cadre doctors would be appointed through the Public Service Commission within a period of six months to partly fill up the required 1,400 specialty cadre doctors in the State.

Inaugurating the new Women and Children's Hospital block at the District Hospital here, the Minister said that an amount of Rs.10 crores would be earmarked for development of the Palakkad District Hospital under the Modernising of Government Programme scheme in the Five-year Plan.

He said Rs.1.5 crores had been sanctioned to set up trauma care centres at the taluk hospitals in Kottarakkara and Koilandy and the District Hospital in Palakkad. Tele-medicine facilities would be set up in the Thiruvanthapuram Medical College, Sree Chithira Tirunal Institute of Medical Sciences and the Regional Cancer Centre, Thiruvanathapuram.

The Finance Minister, K. Sankaranarayanan, who inaugurated the Women's Hospital block, said the State Budget, to be presented on February 23, would be development-oriented but with less tax burden on the people.

He said one-third of the Plan allocation was now going to the three-tier panchayat raj system. This had accelerated development works but there should be accountability in spending mon ey on various projects, he said. N .N. Krishnadas, MP, presided over the function. A.K. Balan, MLA, the district panchayat president, K.V. Ramakrishnan, and the municipal chairperson, E. Rajamma, spoke.

The new hospital block has been constructed at a cost of Rs.175.36 lakhs. An amount of Rs.90 lakhs came from the MP's Local Area Development Fund of Mr. Krishnadas. However, it took a record time of 23 years to be completed, the district panchayat president said.
