NEW DELHI, JAN. 10. The four-year-old girl who along with her mother was brutally assaulted allegedly by her father and his relatives in a dowry torture case would take weeks to recover from the physical trauma and probably months to come out of the mental agony she has undergone. She is at present being treated at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here for injuries in the vulnerable parts of the body. It all happened at Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh on January 2 when Neetu (name changed) and her daughter were allegedly tortured by her husband, her parents-in-law and brothers-in-law "for not fulfilling the demand for payment of Rs. 1.5 lakhs by her family". They allegedly bit off one of her fingers and a lump of flesh from both sides of her chin. The accused pierced the broken portion of a wiper into her daughter's body several times. Even though Neetu has been discharged from hospital and is now recovering fast, the incident has left a deep scar on her psyche. But she is now more concerned about the mental health of her daughter, who is reliving the torture every moment and is still in a critical condition. Whenever her daughter sees unknown faces around her, she starts crying "Mujhe mat maro'' (Don't beat me) Those attending the girl in hospital said she would take weeks to recover. Right now she is undergoing treatment for rectal and other wounds, including a skull injury. It is learnt that she would also require long-term psychological therapy to regain her mental balance and lead a normal life. Relieved that both came out alive from the clutches of her in-laws, Neetu fears that she would not get justice. "My in-laws have good links with influential people and they would use all tactics to prove me wrong. They told my husband (Puneet Chandra) to remain tight-lipped about the incident and got him arrested the same night on the pretext that he was mentally unsound. I heard them telling Puneet that they would spend any amount of money to get him out of jail,'' she said, adding that Puneet's father had produced a forged medical report in support of his claim that Puneet was mentally ill. Meanwhile, the area Superintendent of Police, Alok Sharma, said a case under the provisions of attempt-to-murder and torture for dowry has been registered against the accused. He said while Neetu's father-in-law, an orthopaedic surgeon, had got Puneet arrested, he was still absconding. "The victim was not in a condition to give a formal statement when she approached us. We would record her statement soon and take appropriate action against those named by her in the complaint,'' he said. Mr. Sharma said it was a horrifying incident and the police would take every necessary step to make sure that the guilty were punished.
