Kargil martyr's daughter commits suicide

NEW DELHI, JAN. 10. A fourth year nursing student of LNJP Hospital and daughter of an Army officer who laid down his life in the Kargil war is alleged to have committed suicide in her hostel room on the hospital campus in Central Delhi on Friday night. The police said she took the extreme step due to some domestic problem.

Twenty-two-year-old Kiran Bala was the daughter of K. Prasad who was killed in the Kargil war. She was pursuing a nursing course at LNJP Hospital and was an inmate of the Old Nursing Hostel. On Friday, her fellow nursing student, Ashu, saw her entering her hostel room around 8 p.m. However, when Ashu and another student, Jyotsna, went to her room an hour later, they found Kiran lying unconscious on the bed. They found a syringe and an empty ampule of an anaesthetic tranquiliser "Pavulon'' lying nearby. Ashu and Jyotsna immediately informed the hostel authorities, following which Kiran was rushed to the hospital where she was declared dead on arrival. Initial medical report revealed that she died of some unknown poison. Circumstantial evidence suggested that Kiran injected herself with the tranquiliser.

Kiran's elder brother, Rajender Bansal, is a doctor, while her younger brother, Ganga Prasad, is pursuing law from a Ghaziabad institution. Investigations so far have revealed that Kiran used to talk to her mother through the telephone of a property dealer, Rakesh, a resident of Dilshad Garden, through whom Kiran's family had bought a Ghaziabad flat. Around a year ago, they had also bought a Janata Flat for Rs. 3.5 lakhs from the money collected for her marriage. They were planning to sell the flat at a higher price to get more money for her marriage.

Enquires revealed that for the past some days, Kiran was very concerned about her mother's health. She used to make frequent calls at Rakesh's telephone to know about her well being. "Kiran had been asking Rakesh to get the Janta Flat transferred in the name of her mother, which suggests that she had already planned to end her life,'' said a police officer.

The police have not found any suicide note from her hostel room, but they believe that she was under depression due to some domestic problem and hence she took her life. Her family have not yet disclosed the factors that led Kiran to commit suicide. The police have initiated inquest proceedings and are now waiting for the post-mortem report.
