CHENNAI, JAN. 10. The Central Crime Branch (CCB) today arrested a former police constable on charges of robbing gold ornaments from a jeweller near the Commissioner's office at Egmore on Thursday. Police sources said R. Sundarrajan, formerly with the computer wing of the city police, was terminated from service in 1996. On Thursday, he intercepted the jeweller, Lakshmi Narayanan, at Chennai airport posing as an officer with the Central Bureau of Investigation. The jeweller had gone to the airport to receive from his friend, a bag of jewellery coming from Singapore. Mr. Sundrarrajan informed him that the jewellery had to be checked by officials at the police commissionerate at Egmore. He got into Mr. Narayanan's car and went to the commissionerate. There, Mr. Sundarrajan reportedly spoke to a senior CCB officer. Later, he asked the jeweller to take the car towards Anna Salai. Near the traffic roundabout on Pantheon Road, he snatched the bag from the jeweller, got out of the car and escaped in a waiting autorickshaw. Mr. Narayanan filed a complaint with the CCB on Friday. A police team intercepted the former police constable at the Salem railway station and brought him to Chennai. The accused was on his way to Sabarimala temple. The CCB officers also arrested Vijaya, Mr. Sundarrajan's wife, and are on the lookout for Selvakumar, his accomplice. The role of the CCB officer with whom the accused spoke was also being probed. The gold jewellery, around 350 gm, was recovered, they said.
