LS polls: PM keeps everybody guessing

HYDERABAD, JAN. 10. The Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, did a small pantomime act when asked by presspersons upon his arrival at Hyderabad airport, whether a historic decision on the Lok Sabha elections could be expected on Sunday.

Looking relaxed and apparently in a jovial mood, Mr. Vajpayee pointed towards his ears and waved his hands in a gesture to indicate that he had not heard the question. When the reporter repeated the question, the Prime Minister again signalled that he had not understood it.

The Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, who was standing nearby, assisted the reporter by asking Mr. Vajpayee for a third time whether a decision would be taken on the Lok Sabha elections at the BJP's National Executive committee meeting. Realising that the game was up, Mr. Vajpayee burst out laughing. Apparently, mum was the word with him.

Mr. Vajpayee, who earlier arrived from New Delhi, opted to walk from the special IAF aircraft to the VIP enclosure near the tarmac where a host of political leaders had gathered to greet him. The Governor, S. S. Barnala, the Union Ministers -- B. Dattatreya, Ch. Vidyasagar Rao - the Telugu Desam Parliamentary Party leader, K. Yerran Naidu, several Ministers, MPs, MLAs and senior officials received him.
