Call for focus on frontier research

HYDERABAD, JAN. 10. Speakers at a seminar on `Chemical engineering-Global challenges', organised here on Saturday by the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT) to mark its diamond jubilee celebrations, focussed attention on frontier areas of applied thermodynamics, reaction engineering, modelling and simulation, flow of granular materials and process safety.

D. S. Viswanath, emeritus professor and Dowell Chair at the University of Missouri, Columbia (USA), who was the chief guest, delivered the eighth P. S. Murti Memorial lecture on `Fun and shell games of thermodynamics'. Dr. Murti, a former scientist in the director's grade, was responsible for establishment of the design and engineering activity at IICT and the evolution of the chemical engineering division.

K. V. Raghavan, former Director of IICT, delivered the theme lecture.

B. D. Kulkarni, Head, Chemical Engineering Division, National Chemical Laboratory, Pune, D. V. Khakar of IIT, Mumbai, V. V. Bhujle of Ciba-Geigy Pvt. Ltd, Mumbai, J. S. Yadav, Director, IICT, and Vedanta Chary, Head, Chemical Engineering, IICT, spoke.

A panel discussion providing an opportunity for the participants to interact with experts followed. The seminar was organised for the benefit of chemical engineers, research and development organisations, academic institutions and students.
