Simple procedure for issue of passports urged

HYDERABAD, JAN.10. M. Venkaiah Naidu, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national president, and T. Devender Goud, the State Home Minister, today suggested that procedures for issue of passport should be further simplified and the document made available within 21 days.

They were speaking at the launching of Interactive Voice Response System(IVRS) at the Hyderabad Regional Passport Office here on Saturday.

The system, which helps the public make enquiries about the procedures for obtaining passports through telephone no, 1250244, is being provided in collaboration with the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. It is available round the clock in multilingual mode.

Both Mr. Naidu and Mr. Goud praised the Hyderabad passport office for being the largest such office in the country and for securing ISO 9000 certification. A.P. Jithender Reddy, MP, spoke.

Earlier, welcoming the gathering, the Regional Passport Officer, V. Sraman, said over 2.57 lakh passports were issued in 2003. The office had introduced several innovative steps like introduction of CC TV and restructured police verification system.

The city-based telecom solutions company, Voice Gate Technologies India Pvt Ltd, designed and developed the software for the interactive voice response system. The company is running public voice mail service (answering machine) on behalf of BSNL since August 2002.
