POLLACHI, JAN 10. The Pollachi Municipal Council has reduced the service charge for solid waste removal for various commercial establishments. The council meeting held on Wednesday, under the leadership of Chairman, A. Venkatachalam, passed a resolution to this effect. The resolution was placed before the council following a demand from the various political parties, associations of trade and commerce, public forums, voluntary organisations who said that the charges decided by the civic body for removal of solid waste was on the higher side. However, the Municipality gave a public notice in the media on November 4, 2003 asking for suggestions and objections from the public regarding the service charges stipulated by the council at its earlier meeting on October 10, 2003. Acting on the objections and suggestions received, the civic body conducted a meeting on December 13, 2003. The meeting of the elected representatives and officials led by Chairman, A. Venkatachalam, and the Commissioner, K. Feroz Khan, decided to revise the service charges. Now the minimum charges for solid waste collection would be Rs 50 and the maximum would be Rs 1,000 for hospitals. Temple tank The Chairman also mooted a resolution for handing over the Teppakulam in Ward No. 29 to the Mariamman Angalamman Temple. The resolution was based on a request from the temple trustees seeking to hand over the tank to the temple for proper maintenance and upkeep. The council decided to hand over the tank on the condition that the civic body would continue to take water for its use with tanker lorries and for the public convenience near the tank. The council passed a resolution permitting the exchange of land with the police and revenue departments in lieu of a land identified opposite the existing bus stand. As the existing bus stand was not spacious enough to accommodate buses, an effort has been made to expand it. In lieu of the land opposite the existing bus stand, the municipality decided to give away an equal share of land at Mahalingapuram to both the departments.
