CHIKMAGALUR, JAN. 11. B.S. Patil, Chief Secretary to the Government of Karnataka, on Saturday said the Government had directed the district administration to take steps to deal with the naxalite menace to "nip the problem in the bud". Mr. Patil told presspersons that a team of senior police officials had been formed to tackle the problem. The district authorities had been told to be alert and identify persons from outside the area who were "instigating" local people, he said. Reiterating that the people living in the Kudremukh National Park would not be evicted, he said basic facilities would be provided to them after receiving a report from V.K. Gore, State Development Commissioner, who had visited the area. Promising that basic facilities such as roads, electricity, water, schools, and hospitals would be provided within a year, Mr. Patil said those who wished to move out of the park would be offered an "attractive package". Officials would visit the area every month to examine the implementation of development works, he added. Revealing that the drought situation in the State was likely to intensify this year, he said steps were being taken to ease water shortage and provide employment. The Government had decided to release Rs. 115 crore for drought relief works this year. The Chief Secretary said water sources in the State were not being utilised due to irregular power supply. The Government was considering alternatives to overcome this problem. He stressed the need to provide six-hour three-phase power supply in rural areas. He said 1,100 kitchens would be constructed in the district under the midday meal scheme before the end of June. Funds allotted to gram panchayats would be utilised for this purpose. K.R. Srinivas, Deputy Commissioner, B.K. Singh, Superintendent of Police, R. Shantharaj, Chief Executive Officer of the Chikmagalur Zilla Panchayat, and Hari Kumar Jha, Deputy Conservator of Forests, were present.
