`Send list of artistes for national awards'

SHIMOGA, JAN. 11. K.S.L. Swamy (Ravi), Kannada actor and director, today suggested to the State Government to send a list of eminent film and theatre personalities from the State every year to the Centre for awards such as Padmashri, Padmabhushan, and Padmavibhushan.

Speaking after releasing Amma Pandari Bai, a biography on Pandaribai, Kannada actress, by C.S. Nanjundaiah at a function organised here to celebrate the Silver Jubilee of Pratibha Rang, a cultural organisation, he said that it would be easy for the Centre to identify film and theatre personalities from the State for such awards if the Government submitted a list.

Mr. Swamy said Pandari Bai, and the film director, Girish Kasarvalli, who had won four Swarna Kamal awards, should have been honoured with the national award long ago. The number of recipients of such awards from the State was quite negligible compared to that from Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. Why should artistes from Karnataka be denied such recognition just because the State Government did not submit the list of deserving persons to the Centre?, he asked.

Mr. Swamy said Pandari Bai had made a significant contribution not only to Kannada cinema but also to Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi cinema. He described her as a versatile actress personifying love, affection, and compassion in a succinct manner. He said that literature pertaining to Kannada film personalities was inadequate. However, he complimented Mr. Nanjundaiah for bringing out the biography. No better tribute could have been paid to her valuable contribution to cinema than recording her achievements in a book, he added.

Complimenting members of Pratibha Rang for their contribution to the cultural milieu of Shimoga, he said that if it had successfully completed 25 years of existence in the cultural field, it was because of their hard work and team spirit. He hoped that Pratibha Rang would make its presence felt all over the State.

The president of Pratibha Rang, Vijayashri, who presided over the function, outlined the activities of the rang since its inception.

An interaction on Moodala Mane, a Kannada TV serial, was held as part of the celebrations.
