Backward Classes demand quota in private sector

ANANTAPUR: The State president of the Backward Classes Udyoga Samkshema Sangham, R.V. Prasad, has sought reservation facility for Backward Classes in the private sector employment. He has alleged that the Government is neglecting BCs.

Talking to newspersons here, he has also demanded reservation for BC employees in promotion. The facility was extended to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes about a decade ago by amending the Constitution. The BC employees are not being given the facility in spite of repeated requests.

According to him, about 50 MPs, belonging to Backward Classes, represented the issue to the Prime Minister and the response is positive.

Non-teaching work for teachers deplored

ANANTAPUR: The Andhra Pradesh Teachers' Federation has observed that teachers are unable to concentrate on teaching due to heavy non-teaching work being assigned to them by the Government. It has asked the Government to spare teachers from all sorts of non-teaching work. Talking to newspersons here on Sunday, its State president, A. Narasimha Reddy, the State general secretary, N. Parameshwar Rao, and the leaders -- R. Venkataramudu and Ch. Srinivasulu -- said the non-teaching work was taking a heavy toll on teachers and even affecting the education of students.

They urged the Government not to involve teachers in any survey or enumeration work so that they could concentrate purely on teaching and help improve the standards of education.

Meet on radiology concludes

HYDERABAD: The four-day 57th annual Congress of the Indian Radiological and Imaging Association (IRIA) concluded here on Sunday with a declaration to make radiology cost-effective and easily accessible to common man.

The congress deliberated extensively on bringing radiology within the reach of common man and ways to make it cost-effective, the IRIA president, Gyan P. Lal, and the secretary-general, K. Prabhakar Reddy, said in a statement. The congress recommended, among others, that minimum and necessary radiology investigations should be done at an affordable cost, healthy professional practices to be followed, quackery should not be encouraged and that private health providers arrange mobile radiology vans to give service to rural masses.

The association called for a fight against wrong rulings of Pre-Natal Diagnosis and Testing (PNDT) Act.

No `dial your CM' programme today

HYDERABAD: The "Dial your CM" programme scheduled to be telecast on Doordarshan tomorrow has been cancelled, a press release issued by the Chief Minister's office stated on Sunday.

Appointed to varsity board

HYDERABAD: The Governor of Tamil Nadu, P.S. Ramamohan Rao, has appointed M.V. Subba Rao, dean, veterinary sciences, Acharya N.G. Ranga Agricultural University, Rajendranagar, to the board of management of TN Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Chennai, for a period of three years with effect from the issue of the letter of appointment. The letter was issued by the Governor's Secretariat on January 2, according to a communication.

Sarpanch, two others held

Cuddapah: The police have arrested the sarpanch and two others of the faction-ridden village of Kodigandlapalle in Muddanur mandal and recovered 10 country-made bombs and a sickle.

The sarpanch, Rayapati Venkata Reddy, his brother, Rayapati Ramajaneya Reddy, and Thimma Reddy were arrested and bombs and a hunting sickle were recovered from haystacks, the Superintendent of Police, V.C. Sajjanar, told newsmen here on Sunday.

The SP said a red alert was in force in the district and the police beats intensified in the wake of spurt in dacoities and thefts.

`Recruitment process stayed'

VISAKHAPATNAM: The Andhra Pradesh Administrative Tribunal Judge, Sudhender Kulkarni, recently stayed the recruitment process of 350 Group-I and II posts for not calling applications from the physically handicapped for whom 3 per cent of posts are to be reserved, according to the Physically Challenged People's Association general secretary, M. Suresh Menon.

`Food-for-work' rice seized

Cuddapah: The revenue and police officials have seized 231 bags of rice meant for the `Food-for-work' scheme, valued at around Rs. 1 lakh, from the house of a work inspector of Rural Water Supply (RWS), K. Obulesu, in Kothakottala street in Muddanur town in Cuddapah district.

On a tip-off given by an anonymous caller to the Muddanur sub-inspector, Dada Peer, the revenue and police officials raided Obulesu's house and made the seizure after deducing that it was FFW rice, according to the police. Mr. Obulesu was not present at the time of the raid to ascertain the purpose for which the rice was sanctioned and why he stored it in his house.

`Jandhyala hasyotsavam'

HYDERABAD: To mark the birth anniversary of the film personality, Jandhyala, a three-day `Jandhyala hasyotsavam' is being organised at Ravindra Bharathi from January 12.

Organised by Kinnera Art Theatres, Jandhyala Mitra Mandali and Secunderabad Walkertown Jaycees, the event will have a host of film, television and theatre personalities participating in a series of fun-filled activities. The schedule include a `Hasya kavi sammelan', `Hasyavadhanam', magic show, parody shows and comedy skits.

The film personalities -- Rajendra Prasad, E.V.V. Satyanarayana and Ali -- will be presented with Jandhyala Memorial Awards and the three-day event is expected to be attended by L.B. Sriram, Dharmavarapu Subramanyam, Rallapalli, Mallikarjun Rao, Chitti Babu, Velu, Adi Vishnu, Subbaraya Sarma, Shivaji Raja, Anita Chowdhury and Kadambari Kiran, according to film and television actor, Pradeep.

Three hurt in group clash

MAHBUBNAGAR: Three persons, including a police, were injured in a group clash at Kodangal mandal headquarters town in the district on Sunday.

According to information reaching here, at around 11 a.m., two groups, one belonging to the relatives of the former Kodangal MLA, K. Gurunath Reddy, and the other to Srirami Reddy of the Rayalaseema region, were clashing in connection with a land dispute near the local bus station.

Locals, alleging police failure, attacked the police with stones causing a head injury to the head constable, Syed Gurbani.
