KANCHEEPURAM, JAN. 11. Residents of Madurantakam and people of about 50 neighbouring villages in Kancheepuram district have opposed the State Government's move to pump water from the Madurantakam tank to meet the drinking water needs of Chennai. The residents have threatened to go on an agitation if the Government went ahead with the proposal to send 500 tankers of water everyday to Chennai. Farmers told The Hindu that the tank did not have adequate storage following monsoon failure and the present storage could last only for two or three months to meet the irrigation needs of the villages. The proposal would seriously affect the drinking water needs of the town's residents as well as nearby villages besides affecting irrigation.
Members of political parties, except the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, and people of Madurantakam and nearby villages will form a human chain on Monday at Madurantakam to protest against the Government's move.
