CHENNAI, JAN. 11. Road accidents can be reduced to a large extent if everyone obeyed traffic rules, the Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), G.U.G. Sastry, said here today. Participating in the valedictory function of the Road Safety Week celebrations organised by Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC), Mr. Sastry said everyone should follow the rules instead of expecting other road users to stick by the rules. In India, about 85,000 people died in road accidents annually, he said. In comparison to other States, the number of road accidents was high in Tamil Nadu, Mr. Sastry admitted. ``Everyone should realise their responsibility, only then the number can be brought down.'' On over speeding of vehicles in the city, Mr. Sastry said using speed guns the traffic police booked 200 cases everyday. The District Education Officer in-charge, Vijayalakshmi, appealed to the MTC authorities to allow students to use bus passes on Saturday also. ``Special classes are regularly conducted by various government and Corporation schools on Saturdays. When the students show their passes, the MTC crew refuse to accept them and insist that the children buy tickets.'' Two drivers of MTC who had served for more than 20 years without accident, A. Marimuthu of Anna Nagar depot and P. Netaji of Perambur Depot, were honoured. Prizes were distributed to children who won in oratorical competitions conducted by the MTC. C.T. Meyyappan, Managing Director, MTC; K.N. Krishnamurthy, General Manager, Ashok Leyland; representatives from the Indian Oil Corporation and members of the Brahma Kumari Association spoke.
