HYDERABAD, JAN. 12. The revenue realised by the Commercial Taxes Department through general sales, entry, entertainment and professional taxes -- the four major heads of the department -- has gone up by 8.8 per cent for 2003-04 reaching a total of Rs. 6,334 crores up to December compared to Rs. 5,819 crores for the corresponding period last year. The rise has been attributed to increased tax compliance caused by several factors such as improved industrial performance, strict enforcement and vigilance and various reforms, which helped in establishing transparency and accountability. This has also been possible due to steps being taken to check non-payment sales tax on liquor and oils. Speaking to reporters here on Monday, the Minister for Commercial Taxes, K. Vijayarama Rao, the in-charge Principal Secretary, N. S. Hariharan, and the department's Commissioner, V. Bhaskar, said the department would be able to cross Rs. 9,000-crore mark till Mach 2004, as against Rs. 8,337 crores revenue earned last year. The department would have fully achieved the target of Rs. 9,700 crores, the budgetary target of 2003-04, but for the setbacks on the agricultural front caused by low paddy production, cyclone etc.
