VHR's remarks evoke sharp reaction

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, JAN. 12. The outburst of the AICC secretary, V.Hanumantha Rao, against the former presidents of the AICC and Y.S.Rajasekhara Reddy at a press conference yesterday evoked a sharp reaction within the party today.

Quite a few eyebrows were raised when Mr. Hanumantha Rao remarked that both Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi had set a bad precedent by changing Chief Ministers often. The press conference, aired by Telugu TV channels and widely reported in the press, came as a rude shock to party functionaries here. Mr. Hanumantha Rao went on to add that the AICC president, Sonia Gandhi, would not resort to such bad practices but would retain Chief Ministers even for 10 years. In the same breath, he expressed his opposition to Dr. Rajasekhara Reddy's leadership too.

Speaking to The Hindu, the AICC leader, R.P.N.Singh, said that the AICC had already come to know of Mr.Hanumantha Rao's `intemperate remarks' and would look into the matter. Expressing resentment at the observations, Mr.Singh said the party would take appropriate steps to curb the tendency of such leaders in making damaging statements. He said several leaders brought the matter to the notice of the party high command.

Angry Congress leaders sought action against Mr.Hanumantha Rao for tarnishing the image of Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi.
