Ramanathapuram
By Our Staff Reporter
RAMANATHAPURAM, JAN. 12. A special police team today seized nine lorries lined up on the Vaigai riverbed for transporting sand without valid documents. Based on information that the sand mafia was indiscriminately quarrying sand at Sirakikottai near Paramakudi, the team laid a trap for the culprits twice. During routine patrol last night, the Superintendent of Police received a call that the vehicles were waiting in the riverbed, sources said. A team rushed to the place, but on seeing police personnel, drivers and loadmen escaped. However, two loadmen were held and the lorries handed over to revenue officials. The PWD has only one sand godown at Kamudhi. Hence, large-scale illegal quarrying is going on in the district, say farmers' association representatives. "We brought the matter to the notice of authorities at a grievance day meeting held in December third week." Meanwhile PWD officials sent a proposal for setting up godowns at Nemmeni and Pottithattimadam in the Paramakudi taluk, Ananthur and Neerkundam in the Thiruvadanai taluk and Thozuvalur in the Ramanathapuram taluk.
