TIRUNELVELI, JAN.12. Stressing the need for having toilets in houses, 40 students of the St. John's College at Palayamkottai here today took out a rally holding broomsticks, buckets and baskets and cleaned garbage on roadsides. The Vice-Principal, Harrington Thomas, flagged off the rally, which was actually planned to reach the banks of the Tamiraparani at Kokkirakulam to carryout the cleaning operations. As the police denied permission for the proposal, the rally traversed through Samathanapuram, the Palayamkottai Market and the South Bazar to reach the college again. Raising slogans against defecation in open places, as it caused dreadful diseases, the students, led by John Vellakkann, a professor, insisted on establishing toilets.
