CHENNAI, JAN. 12. "It was a fair amount of risk. The right decision was that I should have taken the draw he offered," Viswanathan Anand said after his second round victory over Vladimir Akopian of Armenia in the Corus chess tournament at Wijk aan Zee in The Netherlands. Anand is in the lead along with Hungary's Peter Leko. Anand went on to join the leaders when his Armenian opponent lost track of the best moves while being short of time. He was offered a draw on the 23rd move but turned it down due to the time advantage. Monday was the first of three free days in this 14-player round-robin category 19 tournament and Anand spoke to The Hindu from his hotel room. In the third and fourth rounds, he faces van Wely with the black pieces and Bologan with white respectively. One can expect Anand to take risks and strike with the white pieces. If van Wely crosses the risk line like he did against Kramnik in the second round with a knight sacrifice, Anand will have a solid defence. Kramnik rebounded from a surprise defeat in the first round to win the next largely due to the risks van Wely took. Kramnik is bound to go full stretch against all opponents, including Anand when they meet in the ninth round. After just one decisive game in the first round, there were three in the next. There is going to be enough fireworks for the fans as the event progresses. Sunday's results (second round): Evgeny Bareev (Rus) 1 drew with Viktor Bologan (Mda) 1; Vladimir Kramnik (Rus) 1 bt Loek van Wely (Ned) 0.5; Viswanathan Anand (Ind) 1.5 bt Vladimir Akopian (Arm) 1; Veselin Topalov (Bul) 1 drew with Ivan Sokolov (Ned) 1. Standings after two rounds: 1-2 Viswanathan Anand (Ind), Peter Leko (Hun) 1.5/2, 3-12 Michael Adams (Eng), Vladimir Akopian (Arm), Evgeny Bareev (Rus), Viktor Bologan (Mda), Vladimir Kramnik (Rus), Alexei Shirov (Esp), Ivan Sokolov (Ned), Peter Svidler (Rus), Veselin Topalov (Bul), Zhang Zhong (Chn) 1 each, 13-14 Jan Timman, Loek van Wely (Ned) 0.5 each.
