Tamil Nadu retains Subbiah Pillai Trophy

CHENNAI, JAN. 12. Despite a Sunil Joshi inspired Karnataka victory spoiling the party somewhat, Tamil Nadu retained the Subbiah Pillai Trophy at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium here on Monday.

The home team, that suffered a final over four-wicket defeat, finished with 17 points, the same as the gallant Kerala that managed to beat Goa by five wickets and a bonus point. However, since Tamil Nadu had overcome Kerala in an earlier group game, the former was adjudged the champion.

Karnataka took the third spot with 13 points, and Andhra (7), Hyderabad (4) and Goa (2) finished in that order. Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) vice-president, U. Prabhakar Rao, gave away the trophy to the winning team.

On an eventful last day of the competition, Kerala opener Sujith Somasundar notched up 115 (136b, 12x4, 3x6), Andhra middle-order batsman Y. Venugopala Rao made 110 not out (130b, 10x4) and Hyderabad left-arm paceman Mohammed Ghouse Baba bagged five for 48.

In the Karnataka-Tamil Nadu duel, the left-handed Joshi's 65-ball 64 (4x4, 3x6) and his 125-run fifth-wicket partnership with C. Raghu (61, 96b, 2x4, 1x6) took Karnataka from 120 for four in 28.2 overs to 245 in 46.4, when Joshi skied a catch to C. Ganapathy near the sightscreen off paceman D.J. Gokulakrishnan, the pick of the Tamil Nadu bowlers (three for 39).

The hard-hitting Joshi was reprieved on 20 though when Tamil Nadu skipper S. Suresh put down a catch at covers, off-spinner S.R. Ganesh Kumar being the bowler to suffer. Otherwise, it was a breezy innings by Joshi, who picked his spots on the field with ease in a pressure situation. Thilak Naidu's 54 (75b, 5x4) was also a valuable contribution for Karnataka.

Earlier, Joshi claimed three wickets with his left-arm spin as Tamil Nadu, put in, reached 256 for seven, Sridharan Sriram top-scoring with 79 (81b, 7x4). Sriram and S. Sharath (56, 65b, 5x4) added 116 for the fourth wicket in 20.2 overs before the partnership was broken when the former, attempting a sweep shot, was castled by Joshi. The Tamil Nadu innings lost momentum in the last ten overs when only 59 runs were added — Tamil Nadu was 197 for three at the beginning of the period — in contrast to Karnataka's 78 in the final 9.2 overs, that concluded with a Dodda Ganesh six off left-arm spinner R. Ramkumar.

Somasundar's hundred and useful efforts from M. Suresh Kumar (32 off only 18 balls) and C. Hemant Kumar (39) enabled Kerala overhaul Goa's 216 for seven in the 38th over at ICL-Guru Nanak. Earlier, Amit Dani scored 61 not out (68b, 8x4) for Goa.

Venugopala Rao's century and supportive knocks from R.V.Ch. Prasad (45) and A.S.K. Verma (42) took Andhra, which won the toss, to 230 for six at CPT-IP, notwithstanding a five-wicket haul by Hyderabad left-arm paceman Ghouse Baba. Andhra held its nerve, even as Hyderabad, for which opener Daniel Manohar made 58 (67b, 9x4), fell eight runs short of the target, with ten deliveries remaining.

The scores:

At MAC: Tamil Nadu 256 for seven in 50 overs (S. Suresh 42, Vidyut Sivaramakrishan 37, S. Sriram 79, S. Sharath 56, Sunil Joshi three for 44) lost to Karnataka 262 for six in 49.2 overs (M. Beerala 26, Thilak Naidu 54, C. Raghu 61, Sunil Joshi 64, D.J. Gokulakrishnan three for 39). Karnataka 4; Tamil Nadu 0.

At ICL-Guru Nanak: Goa 216 for seven in 50 overs (V. Kolambkar 41, R. Wach 29, A. Dani 61 not out) lost to Kerala 220 for five in 37.4 overs (S. Somasundar 115, M. Suresh Kumar 32, C. Hemant Kumar 39). Kerala 5; Goa minus 1.

At CPT-IP: Andhra 230 for six in 50 overs (Y. Venugopala Rao 110 not out, R.V.Ch. Prasad 45, A.S.K. Verma 42, M. Ghouse Baba five for 48) bt Hyderabad 222 in 48.2 overs (D. Manohar 58, T. Suman 40, Vishnuvardhan 29). Andhra 4; Hyderabad 0.
