CPI(M) stands exposed: Cherian

By Our Staff Reporter

KOLLAM, JAN. 12. The trade union leader, V.B. Cherian, has said that the present developments within the CPI(M) exposed the fact that the party was already under the grip of `Gorbachevists'.

At a press conference here today, he said that perestroika and glasnost had been already implemented here by the CPI(M) in the form of the Peoples' Plan Campaign and Manaviyam. Through both the programmes, the CPI(M) had been promoting class collaboration instead of class struggle. When the CPI(M) politburo member and Leader of the Opposition, V.S. Achuthanandan, says that `Gorbachevists' had diluted Communism, does it mean that Communism had to come in for corrections, Mr. Cherian wanted to know.

The Peoples' Plan Campaign was also a practical experiment of the fourth world concept projected by the Kerala Sastra Sahithya Parishad leader, M.P. Parameswaran. The Manaviyam was again the cultural face of the fourth world concept.

While the State secretariat member of the CPI(M) and MLA, Thomas Isaac, was the architect of the Plan Campaign, the Central committee member of the party, M.A. Baby, had spearheaded the Manaviyam programme.

Meanwhile, even as the CPI(M) State secretariat had asked Mr. Parameswaran to give an explanation on his controversial positions based on the fourth world concept, vis-a-vis the party ideology, it has to be noted that the CPI(M) had prevented the DYFI organ "Yuvadhara'' from publishing an article by the CPI(M) politburo member, E. Balanandan, against the fourth world concept, Mr. Cherian alleged.

Later, when Mr. Achuthanandan, also came out against the fourth world concept, it turned into a controversy. When the controversy began growing, the supporters of the fourth world concept like CPI(M) State secretary, Pinarayi Vijayan, in addition to Mr. Isaac and Mr. Baby, took an U-turn and began condemning Mr. Parameswaran's fourth world ideology, he said.

But can the chapter be closed so easily, Mr. Cherian asked. He said those who had prevented the publication of Mr. Balanandan's article were in fact supporters of the fourth world theory.
