KANDALERU (NELLORE DT.), JAN. 12. The Andhra Pradesh Minister for Information, S. Chandramohan Reddy, this evening formally started the process of releasing water from the Kandaleru reservoir for Chennai city, apart from Nellore and Chittoor districts.

Addressing a press conference at the reservoir site, about 50 km from Nellore, the Minister made it clear that the first priority would be for farmers of Nellore district, mainly those in the Rapur, Venkatagiri and Sullurpet areas. The requirements for irrigation and drinking in the district would be met. The total quantity for all purposes would be one tmcft. The next preference would be for irrigation in Chittoor and drinking water requirements of Tirupati, with a supply of 0.7 tmcft. Then comes the drinking water requirements of Chennai, for which one tmcft would be earmarked and the proportionate expenditure met by the Tamil Nadu Government.

The total quantity for the three areas would be around 3.25 tmcft, with an estimated evaporation loss ranging from 0.3 to 0.4 tmcft. Though water was released today, the flow would begin only on the third day after the canal was wetted for two days. It is said it will take nearly 12 days for water to reach Chennai.

The Minister said during the last six years, 33 tmcft had been drawn from the Krishna to the Somasila reservoir; out of this 17 tmcft was supplied to Chennai city.
