CHENNAI, JAN. 12. It was an occasion for State Congress leaders to come together and take a vow to make their party president, Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister. The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president, G.K.Vasan and the past presidents, S.Balakrishnan and E.V.K.S. Elangovan, who shared the dais at a function organised by the former president, Kumari Ananthan, here today, said there was no groupism in the State and the partymen were united in making Ms.Sonia Gandhi Prime Minister. Mr.Vasan said both the Central and State Governments failed to alleviate the miseries of the people. The BJP Government's promise of one crore jobs every year was only on paper, what with the number of unemployed increasing. Subsidies given to village industries during the Congress regime were withdrawn. Only by bringing back Kamaraj rule, could the State usher in prosperity. Mr.Elangovan said neither the Centre nor the State Government was interested in implementing welfare programmes for the poor. Mr.Balakrishnan wanted more incentives and encouragement given to village industries to create more employment in rural areas. Earlier, Mr.Vasan declared open an exhibition on palm products. Mr. Ananthan said thousands of workers in villages depended on palm trees for livelihood. In the absence of government support, they were facing a bleak future.
